A rich, velvety sweet potato casserole made with just a few simple ingredients, featuring a hint of bourbon for depth and complexity. This comforting side dish is perfect for holidays or weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into uniform 1-inch cubes.
  2. Place the cubes in a large pot, cover with cold water by an inch, add a pinch of salt, and bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce to a simmer and cook until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain well and let sit for 2 minutes to steam off excess moisture.
  4. Return potatoes to the warm pot and add softened butter, heavy cream, maple syrup, and bourbon.
  5. Mash until smooth or beat with a hand mixer for 2-3 minutes until fluffy. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Transfer mixture to a greased 9×9 inch baking dish and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for 15 minutes until edges are bubbly and top is slightly set.
  8. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with extra maple syrup if desired.

Notes

Ensure potatoes are warm when mashing for the smoothest texture. Do not overcook the potatoes or they will become waterlogged. The bourbon adds depth but does not make the dish alcoholic. For a dairy-free version, swap butter for coconut oil and cream for coconut milk.
