A warm, rustic, and easy-to-make sangria that melds dry red wine with apple cider and fresh fruit in a slow cooker for deep, comforting flavors perfect for autumn gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750ml) dry red wine (Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 64oz (1.9 liters) 100% pure apple cider
  • 3 large apples (mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp), cored and chopped
  • 2 medium pears (Bosc or Anjou), sliced thinly
  • 2 large oranges, sliced into rounds
  • 34 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise pods
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 cup bourbon or dark rum (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash all fruit thoroughly. Slice apples and pears into wedges or chunks, removing cores. Slice oranges into rounds.
  2. Place the chopped apples, pears, and orange slices into the slow cooker insert, spreading them out evenly.
  3. Toss cinnamon sticks and star anise on top of the fruit. Sprinkle freshly grated nutmeg over everything.
  4. Pour the red wine, apple cider, and orange juice over the fruit and spices. Add bourbon or rum if using. Stir gently to submerge the fruit.
  5. Cover the slow cooker and set to ‘Low’ for 2 to 3 hours. Do not use ‘High’ to prevent fruit from disintegrating.
  6. Once cooked, strain out large fruit pieces and spices if a clear drink is preferred, or leave them in for a rustic look.
  7. Ladle the warm sangria into mugs or wine glasses. Garnish with a cinnamon stick or apple slice and serve immediately.

Notes

Do not use ‘High’ heat as it can make the fruit mushy and evaporate alcohol too quickly. If the sangria tastes too strong, add more cider or water. For firmer fruit, add apples and pears in the last hour of cooking. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
