These soft, chewy red velvet crinkle cookies feature a crackly sugar coating and a tender, brownie-like texture. Made with simple pantry staples like buttermilk and cocoa powder, they are easy to prepare and perfect for holidays or everyday treats.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 12 teaspoons red gel food coloring
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated white sugar (for rolling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together until light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes).
  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in vanilla extract, buttermilk, and red food coloring until fully combined and smooth.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Portion dough using a cookie scoop or tablespoon. Roll each ball in the 1/2 cup of granulated sugar until fully coated.
  8. Place dough balls on prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between each cookie.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Cookies should look slightly underbaked in the center but set around the edges.
  10. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Ensure butter is softened but not melted to prevent excessive spreading. Chilling the dough is crucial for texture and shape. Use gel food coloring for best color intensity without altering dough consistency. For gluten-free option, substitute all-purpose flour with a 1:1 gluten-free blend. Cookies stay fresh in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
